President Obama’s leading diplomat for Asia, Daniel Russel has warned China to peacefully resolve territory conflicts with its neighbors. The warning comes in the wake of Russia’s annexation of Crimea. The threat that America poses to China for not complying with this request is mainly economic retaliation. Given the interdependence of the Chinese and American economies, this warning should have a, “chilling effect on anyone in China who might contemplate the Crimea annexation as a model.”
This warning comes in response to China’s recent deployment of several vessels in the wake of its marine territory dispute with the Philippines. Given the relationship between the United States and China, it will be interesting to see how China reacts to this diplomatic move by the United States.
